***UPDATE AND INFORMATION DURING COVID-19***
MDCS continues to be a support and therapeutic environment for those in need during these difficult times. Our services continue via telehealth (video and telephone) and in-person modalities. Due to this, there is flexibility in the times and days of when you will be able to receive the therapy from our caring professional clinicians. Now more than ever if you are if you need therapy please reach out. If you are unable to pay, or are worried about the ability to pay, we stress to not let this be a barrier to your therapy. We will work with you to receive the support you need.
MDCS stands in the fight with Black Lives Matter. MDCS staff continue to support anti-oppressive and anti-racist actions in New York and across the globe. We pride ourselves on maintaining an environment for staff and clients to explore how injustices have impacted each individual.
We are a community of caring professionals who are committed to the love and respect of all people. Our mission is to provide affordable psychotherapy and counseling. We offer services to those who are experiencing difficulties
We also provide professional training, development and supervision in a supportive peer environment.
We are called to “feel with” each other as radically relational human beings. Empathy creates in us the desire to “walk with” each other without judgment and to help alleviate suffering and distress.
We commit ourselves to honor each person’s inherent worth, and to respect his/her individual journey toward wholeness. “A person is of more value than a world.” St. Mary Euphrasia, Foundress of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd.
We believe in the possibility of positive change and growth within every person. We believe in the process of transformation and self-actualization.
We work to foster collegiality, connection and inclusion. We offer an open, hospitable and sacred space for people to share their struggles, their joy, their learning and their dreams. We imagine one another’s highest good.
Maria Droste Counseling Services was established in November 1982 by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd who have been in the vanguard of human service providers in New York City since the mid-nineteenth century. Maria Droste (1863-1899) was a Good Shepherd Sister particularly known for her gift of consolation in relationships with others. Maria Droste Counseling Services is a not-for-profit agency (under the New York State not-for-profit corporation “St. Germaine’s Services”).
Maria Droste Counseling Services has provided thousands of clients from the New York metropolitan area with excellent and affordable mental health care. The agency was founded on the belief that clinicians fortunate enough to have the resources to earn professional credentials would welcome the opportunity to give something back to the community. This dream keeps being realized – the agency began with two volunteers in a tiny walk-up office on 23rd Street. Now we have a combination of over 20 volunteer and fee-for-service clinicians that work in a 10-office suite on Madison Avenue. Maria Droste Counseling Services continues to work on expanding the client population and staff with the hope for growth, support, and transformation for all.
